Murder in the Front Row: The San Francisco Bay Area Thrash Metal Story
None of the tunes and few of the faces and stories in this doc will be unfamiliar to thrash aficionados, but as someone who always felt a strong connection to the music and no connection at all to the beer-soaked mayhem that fueled it, I was most interested in the glancing references made to the adults in the room, some of whom were new to me. Metal Blade Records honcho Brian Slagel; Ruthie’s Inn proprietor/promoter… See more →

Megadeth
Tonight I got to see Megadeth play in a room a little bigger than my apartment and it was very very great.

Today’s sad news is an opportunity to remember that expressing thanks for things that move us is never time wasted. twitter.com/robweychert/st…
And then there was the time dozens of @RockBand fanatics scoured my online existence to try to solve this mystery. twitter.com/robweychert/st…

And now the great Nick Menza has left us. I never got anywhere with the drums, but he was the guy who made me want to. Another tearful RIP.
Dreamed I was running a 5K as a surrogate for @DaveMustaine. Scott Adsit worked the registration table, singing “Killing Is My Business.”
Megadeth’s Rust in Peace just turned 25. I wrote about it for the @RockBand blog awhile back. web.archive.org/web/2011051315…
Today I learned that the “Hangar 18” intro recycles the chord progression from the “Call of Ktulu” intro, and all the world is new again.
Thrash metal: So many bands have nailed the sound, but so few have written memorable songs. Maybe that’s why the “big four” bands dominated?

Rust in Peace: Thoughts from a Super Fan
Has it really been twenty years already?
I still have that 90-minute cassette whose A-side contained my first copy of Megadeth’s Rust In Peace. Though I had already cut my teeth on other metal bands, I was wary of Megadeth at first. Their name alone seemed to embody everything that was supposed to be frightening and dangerous about heavy metal, and this particular 14-year-old Catholic boy was slightly less interested in rebellion than he was… See more →

I tweeted that one of my all-time favorite albums was coming to Rock Band soon, and apparently the fans were watching. This is one of at least two forum discussions with dozens of posts that are scouring my web site and last.fm account for clues as to what the album might be. Kinda creepy but mostly funny.
One of my all-time favorite albums comes to Rock Band soon. The many adolescent hours I spent studying its drum parts have finally paid off.
Considered getting another copy of Megadeth's Countdown to Extinction before Last.fm reminded me why I ditched it in the first place. Ick.
Video from my performance last week with my a capella brothers in Megabreath (apologies for the poor audio): youtube.com/watch?v=ASONIYXRN…
If you didn't perform an a capella version of Megadeth's "Peace Sells" in front of 300+ coworkers at lunch today, you really missed out.
