Freddy Rumsen : Sterling Cooper :: Dave Mustaine : Metallica
Heading out to the free Mission of Burma show at MIT.
The Besnard Lakes
What's worse? The throbgoblin conclave on my shoulder blade, or having "Two Princes" stuck in my head all goddamn day? I just can't decide.
I would be less cranky about someone beating me to this band name if they were doing it the proper typographic justice: bit.ly/xhict
Not much real covergence in It Might Get Loud's meeting of the minds, but their individual stories still sent me straight home to my guitar.
Apparently there is a comedian named Bob Marley. Sight unseen, I'm gonna call that a lose/lose situation.
Inspiration strikes thanks to the sudden alignment of Steve Reich, a fretboard, an image in search of a pattern, and the stroke of midnight.
Art's subjectivity often makes music recommendations more about superficial genre labels than emotionally evocative tonality. Seems a shame.
Singing De La Soul's "Me, Myself, and I" in the voice of Biggie Smalls.
Lots of great tours have stopped in Philly but not Boston since I moved. It so used to be the other way around. Grass is always greener.
Music: Feature:Chuck Klosterman Repeats The Beatles
Chucky does it again. Very funny stuff.
Revisiting Unwound's swan song, Leaves Turn Inside You, for the first time in awhile. Man. It won't stop being fantastic. last.fm/music/Unwound/Leaves+…
If I had my whole life to do over, one of my top priorities would be to make sure Sublime didn't exist a second time.
Considered getting another copy of Megadeth's Countdown to Extinction before Last.fm reminded me why I ditched it in the first place. Ick.
Kind of Bloop
When I first heard about this awhile back, I had serious doubts about chiptune Miles covers. But I have to admit the samples on the site sound kind of awesome.
Wow, Bob Mould mentioned in the same breath as Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix: movies.nytimes.com/2009/08/14/mov…
Les Paul, Guitar Innovator, Dies at 94
:(
Proud to be an insignificant but extremely appreciative participant in the gargantuan legacy of Les Paul. RIP.
W! A-S-H! I-N-G! T-O-N, baby! DC!
My mind often wanders, but today's mental recitation of "Love Is a Battlefield" in the voice of an old Russian man is creeping me out a bit.
AC/DC
First stadium concert in a long time. I can’t believe there are people who experience live music exclusively this way.
AC/DC has disproved my theory that I couldn’t be thoroughly entertained by a band playing a quarter mile away. Sad we missed Anvil, though.
Whiny acoustic cover of a-Ha's "Take on Me." File under Fuck You.
Just scored a free ticket for next week's AC/DC show. @HMXCasey is a good man, despite what the tabloids say about him.
If there is one thing that will persuade me to get an eMusic account, it is being prevented from seeing what music they have to offer.
Film: Newswire: Sony pays over 50 million dollars for rights to Michael Jackson film
The first sentence is priceless.
Scaring people off the dance floor.
5+ hours into a 6.5 hour train ride, doing some pre-party iTunes prep, feeling extraordinarily positive on the concept of music in general.
MTV Games and Harmonix Empower Artists and Labels to Get Their Music in the Game with the Rock Band Network
Um. Kaboom. I can finally talk about one of the things I’ve been working on.
Psst. Hey. Musicians. Want your music in Rock Band? Soon you can do it yourself. Behold, the Rock Band Network! rockband.com/rock-band-networ…
Music: The A.V. Club Blog: This ain’t your daddy’s Postal Service cover!
I’m really curious to see how far into its hallowed halls popular culture will let this crabcore nonsense get. I have a sinking suspicion that it won’t be long before it’s not even fun to laugh at it anymore.
No Doubt
This is part of a massive series for the current No Doubt tour, and they’re all pretty nice. Check out the rest.
Just remembered a dream in which Craig Wedren said Pony Express Record was Shudder to Think's debut, and I was like, "Duh, no, it wasn't."
Whatever the question, a Smart Playlist is the answer.
Music: Random Rules: Air Guitar Champion Hot Lixx Hulahan
I fucking love this guy.
Music: Primer: Heavy metal
This is a good, broad introduction to heavy metal in all its shades, for anyone who’s interested.
Notwithstanding his controversial latter years, the world is a less wonderful place without Michael Jackson in it. Rest in peace, Michael.
Video from my performance last week with my a capella brothers in Megabreath (apologies for the poor audio): youtube.com/watch?v=ASONIYXRN…
Guitar Hero 5 box art revealed, includes no guitars
If this is in fact the final box art (and I’m really skeptical that it is), this is some seriously half-assed shit. Ordinarily I’m a fan of understatement in design, but everything about this is awkward: the composition, the wording of the new features, and especially the reworked logo (which I know IS final), complete with phoney-baloney Photoshop spray-paint effect. I feel pretty confident that my obvious bias barely factors into my opinion on this.… See more →
If you didn't perform an a capella version of Megadeth's "Peace Sells" in front of 300+ coworkers at lunch today, you really missed out.
Learning a whole bunch of songs I just realized I need to know for the mocap audition I'm doing in two hours. This should be interesting.
They Might Be Giants
They Might Be Giants are great, but there’s not enough snark in the solar system to adequately describe their audience.
Why is the world in love again? Why are we marching hand in hand? Why are the ocean levels rising up? Tonight I'll find out.
Ordinarily, I try to be mindful of my neighbors when playing Rock Band drums at home, but all bets are off with Iron Maiden.
Trying to find YouTube videos of last night's Faith No More show in London that don't look and sound like complete shit.
Streaming tracks from the new Tortoise record coming out this month (trts.com), battling the logistics of seeing them this summer.
