Recent experience
Rob Weychert Design, LLC
Owner, 2010–present: As an independent designer and consultant, I’ve helped clients organize conferences, improve election processes, teach kids applied math skills, present annotated Buddhist texts, and sell custom surgical training prosthetics, designing everything from banners and brochures to dashboards and databases, for clients including Pew Charitable Trusts, Mailchimp, Letterboxd, Kino Lorber, and Sub Pop Records.
ProPublica
Editorial Experience Designer, 2015–2022: ProPublica is a Pulitzer-winning nonprofit newsroom dedicated to investigative journalism. I art directed and produced bespoke layouts for feature stories and helped develop and implement the design system used across the website and other platforms. To these ends, I created an open source tool for grid layout called Column Setter, atop which I designed and built the robust editorial layout framework now used by the bulk of ProPublica stories. I also ran a web camp mentoring less experienced staffers in the fundamentals of web design.
A Book Apart
Print Producer, 2011–2017: A Book Apart published brief books by leading voices in the digital design industry for people who design, write, and code. I handled layout and typesetting for over two dozen books, reshaping the editorial/production pipeline in the process by creating tightly integrated templates on both sides.
Harmonix Music Systems
Interaction Designer, 2008–2010: Harmonix is a music-oriented game developer best known for creating the blockbuster Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises. I designed menu systems accommodating a wide range of options and settings for Rock Band 3 and Dance Central. The latter game was a launch title for Xbox 360’s Kinect motion sensor and a pioneer in gesture-based interaction design.
Other career highlights
I helped establish the Philadelphia office of Happy Cog, a web-focused design agency and early and influential advocate for web standards, and served as creative director. I’ve spoken about my design philosophy and practice at conferences including SXSW, An Event Apart, Brooklyn Beta, and the Society for News Design. My writing on design has also enjoyed an enthusiastic audience both on my personal blog and in industry publications like Net Magazine, Scroll Magazine, and 24 Ways.
