Robtober

My annual, custom-designed horror movie marathon

Graphic design, motion design, UI/UX design, code

Every October, I curate a month of horror movies and publish the schedule in a custom-designed blog post for anyone interested. I call it Robtober, and it’s always a fun excuse to properly celebrate the spooky season, revel in the aesthetic excess of the genre, and try out some new things with CSS.

Robtober 2020

The intro for the 2020 edition is effectively a scrollable teaser trailer, touching on the year’s litany of real-life horrors before culminating in some delightfully jagged handmade title lettering by the great Jen Mussari.

Robtober 2021

The 2021 edition is an homage to the bygone days of VHS, with a VCR blue screen opener, a TV static background, and three-dimensional videotape boxes for each film.

Robtober 2022

The 2022 edition has a ransom note theme, with each letter of its title screen taken from a different horror movie across eight decades.

Robtober 2023

The opening animation for the 2023 edition dramatically smashes into a glass barrier before introducing a new way to browse the films, with grid, list, and slideshow views.

Robtober 2024

Since the 2024 edition was preoccupied with the Exorcist and Omen franchises, I tried to make its opener look as evil and foreboding as possible, crafting a flaming title screen with dramatically responsive typography.
