Inspired by a New York Times interview with B.J. Novak:

Mr. Novak said he knew that he and Mr. Daniels thought alike when, during their first meeting, Mr. Daniels drew a Venn diagram to illustrate his definition of comedy. "One circle was truly innovative, quality comedy, and one circle was what people enjoy," Mr. Novak recalled. "And he said, 'All I'm interested in is what's in the middle.'"

I'm stumped. All of my iPhone apps are up-to-date, and the Applications window in iTunes doesn't indicate that any two apps are in any way different than the others. So what does that 2 mean? And how do I make it go away?

I recently started using the Rating feature in iTunes, and sometimes it can be an interesting visual representation of what I already know. You don't even need to look at the full-size image of this chronological list of Metallica albums to see what the Rating column on the far right has to say about the band's consistency over the years.

I'm not sure how long this has been part of Starbucks's visual identity, but it's fitting that they should try to co-opt the look of a local coffee shop, completely miss the point, and subsequently reinforce their own corporate homogeny. They may sometimes hire baristas with a creative, independent spirit, but they certainly won't let them anywhere near a chalkboard.
