November 2018

Month archive / 63 posts

Hello, dear reader!

November is gone, but its links remain.

I published a couple of nerdy blog posts in November: one about how I’m using my Letterboxd data to address my cinematic blindspots, and one about a common convention of editorial design that’s currently incompatible with CSS Grid.

Lots of interesting stuff in the links this month; for what it’s worth, my favorites are Earworm’s series of videos about jazz.

Editorial Layouts, Floats, and CSS Grid

CSS Grid is in many ways a dream come true, but there’s at least one basic thing it can’t do.

I’ve been getting my feet wet with CSS Grid this year. The new possibilities it introduces for page layout on the web are exciting, but before venturing too far into those waters, I wanted to see how it handles the kind of layouts I’m already designing. Most of the work I do on the web—at ProPublica and here on my site—is editorial design, so I was keen to learn how Grid accommodates the conventions of… See more →

Would you be interested in having me or the founder of my company put together a guest post for you instead? We have been featured in Entrepreneur, Business Week, CNN, and more. Looking forward to hearing from you! Best, Harris

Decades of Horror

Using personal data and crowdsourcing for film curation

Having just wrapped up another successful Robtober, I’m already thinking ahead to next year. Making a month-long schedule of horror movies is always more work than I think it will be, especially because I aim for most of the movies to be ones I haven’t seen before. As I’ve covered previously, my curation process is fairly involved, but I recently realized I’ve been ignoring a hugely valuable resource.

It’s Letterboxd, dummy
