The Dismemberment Plan
Tonight I danced my ass off to a live Dismemberment Plan set for the first time in seven years.
A day that @essl and I discuss heavy metal is a day that the word “dude” is very safe from extinction.

Documentary Chronicles Crazy Story of Throbbing Gristle’s Genesis P-Orridge and His Wife
I’m not sure there has ever been a subject more deserving of a documentary probe than this one.
Hüsker Dü’s “Reoccurring Dreams” works surprisingly better in practice than in theory.
So, @twcable_nyc, nearly 48 hours into my area’s outage, your phone people still have nothing to say? Solution ETA, please?
Ever since every cop and EMT became a remix artist, it’s actually kind of soothing to hear a siren play out in its natural cadence.
Thanks for your replies to my arts vs. sports performance enhancing drugs question. You’re right; the differentiating factor is competition.
Honest question, not a polemic: Why does our attitude about the concept of performance enhancing drugs not extend to the arts?
Remember when Homer resorted to fishing after being ejected from the Frying Dutchman? That’s me on 3G when the internet goes down.
Comments appended to retweets are almost always redundant, and they make for ugly syntax to boot.

Film: Newswire: Kevin Smith announces retirement from directing, intention to distribute films himself
I’m sure a filmmaker who hadn’t already made his name on the back of the corporate machine would have no difficulty independently marketing and distributing his shitty films to the level of success that awaits Kevin Smith’s heroic new venture. After all, what “masturbating stoner” doesn’t already have over a million Twitter followers?
Can someone explain Rihanna’s appeal? She always looks and sounds so bored. How does she convince anyone to feel differently?
Every so often, I’ll remember that there is still a band out there that thinks it is The Misfits, and I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.
Wondering for the last time why I have a LinkedIn account.
Ownership of the Zen Riffer means being the punch line to the joke that is the Zen Riffer. zenriffer.com
Finally watched Jackie Brown. Pam Grier was a no-brainer for the title role, but damn, what a genius bit of casting Robert Forster was.
Spending the day in bed with philosophical examinations of technology, communication, self, and their intersections.
Watch: The Dismemberment Plan on “Fallon”
Travis’s vocals on “What Do You Want Me to Say” are kind of terrible, but they sound fucking great otherwise. Can’t wait to see them next week.
Therapy?’s Troublegum may be the perfect ’90s teen angst record. Maudlin lyrical literalism, the perfect synthesis of abrasive and melodic.
If your film’s trailer uses “In the Hall of the Mountain King” or “Baba O’Riley”, go directly to jail. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200.
Mad Men’s Furniture Showroom
Khoi does a pretty fantastic job of encapsulating Mad Men’s virtues.
The Big Picture creator moves on
As far as I can tell, In Focus doesn’t have its own RSS feed. C’mon!
Music: Newswire: Archers Of Loaf played an unannounced reunion show this weekend
If Archers tour, my show-going ratio of current bands to reunited bands may just tip irrevocably into "you are old and irrelevant" territory.
Music: Newswire: R.I.P. Trish Keenan of Broadcast
I didn’t even know she was sick. This is so sad.
Stunned and saddened by Trish Keenan’s untimely passing, but glad I got to see Broadcast while she was still with us. avclub.com/articles/rip-t…

Remission
Reconnecting with early Skinny Puppy, annoyed by all the inessential junk they crammed into the reissues.
Calvin & Hobbes Search Engine
I remember a particular C&H strip that I loved which used snowmen in a satire of the supposed boundary between “high” and “low” art. I have the complete collection but have never been able to find it. If this search engine is comprehensive, then my memory is disappointingly defective.
Social contract addendum: “If you make me take my headphones off just to ask me for money, I will pull your brain out through your nose.”
Filing that two-year-old mountain of paperwork wasn’t on today’s agenda, but now it’s done, and I am a champion.
Dreamed of a Lego mosaic of Ella Fitzgerald’s Lullabies of Birdland descending a ladder. So Dali’s drug of choice must have been Cheetos.
In my dream, the flood waters were rising, but all the guy in the boat would do is gun down people who said yes to “Are you Chinese?”
SHORT stories - Wisdom Teeth - Don Hertzfeldt (via...
I wish I could find a way to adequately express how awesome and important Don Hertzfeldt is.
The Philadelphia Inquirer (acting apparently in accordance with the AP Stylebook) abbreviates “third” as “3d”. It drives me up the wall.
Standing on the precipice of the rabbit hole that is value theory.
You Don’t Know Jack pushed to Feb. 8
I’m really looking forward to this. I played the hell out of YDKJ in the late ’90s and it’s only improved with age. I do wish they could have kept doing the web version with weekly episodes and daily Dis or Dats, and I’m surprised the new version won’t be available on iOS. But whatever, I’m glad it’s back. Oh, and see if you can beat my $19,889 score on the sample game. :)
Game designers: What responsibility do you feel to the player when weighing replay value vs. rewarding OCD behavior? Example: Angry Birds.
Dad

Nothing is Forgotten Ryan Andrews has crafted a sweet little...
Subject matter wise, this is timely for me, but I think I’d have found it just as affecting even if that weren’t the case. Wonderful textures, beautifully told story.

Wish I could have watched True Grit with my dad.
